Long ago the capital had gates on all four sides; beyond them lay the world of demons, within, the world of people. One was Rajomon, to the south. Hearing an oni dwelt there, a warrior went to slay it, but the oni drew near disguised as a person and attacked. He cut off its arm and fled by a hair, and the oni said: “Remember this — within seven days I will come to take that arm back.”

That figure — a woman, or an old woman…? Be not deceived. By the seventh night it comes to reclaim its arm.

On nights from winter into spring, people called the many fires seen in fields and hills “fox-fire.” Some say foxes strike their tails to make the flames; others, that a fox with a bone in its mouth breathes fire.

A yokai who brings the rain, in the form of a young woman. A young mother whose newborn was spirited away on a rainy day turned, in her grief, into a yokai — and may come to carry off crying children. Is that a small child crying somewhere? Or is it I who weep?

Is the rain-woman a nuisance who summons the rain… or a goddess of rain who ends the drought…

At dusk a white cloth some ten metres long — one tan — flutters softly across the sky. Soundlessly it steals close, wraps a person’s face or neck, and takes their breath. Grasp at it and it slips away; cut at it and there is no resistance. In the nights of Kyushu, it appears even now.

Is that drying bleached cloth… or a cloth-spirit adrift in the night…

Chief of the oni, said to dwell on Mt. Oe and to carry off and devour people from the capital. Once a beautiful youth, he is said to have turned into an oni at the end of an unfulfilled love. Plied with sake by Minamoto no Yorimitsu and his men, he was slain as he lay drunk.

Was it birth that made him an oni, or the cruelty of people… At the end of a drunken doze, the head is struck off.

Said to be the oni closest to Shuten-doji, famed alongside him on Mt. Oe. Though his arm was severed at Rajomon, he later visited disguised as the warrior’s aunt and, seizing his chance, took his arm back.

Is the old woman at your door truly your aunt…? When that hand reaches out, the true form appears.

A legendary being with a crow-beaked face, said to fly at will. The Karasu-tengu of Mt. Kurama is said to have taught swordsmanship to the young Ushiwaka-maru, and with its supernatural power it is even said to have descended upon the capital to rage there. People projected onto the tengu their fears of the wild mountains and of the bandits who lurked in them; it is called both yokai and god.

Passed down in many tellings, with no true record. What are they, truly… yokai… or god…

The bones of those who died from famine or war with their regrets unresolved gather together, forming a giant skeleton that appears at midnight — the Gashadokuro. Mukurohime is a princess of the dead, draped in countless bones yet still seeking beauty.

The Gashadokuro is a giant skeleton formed from the bones of the aggrieved. Yugai is its wandering form — faint and translucent, still carrying a lingering attachment to the world of the living.
