Well, this time I would like to introduce you to a day in Maiko‘s life!
Japanese girls may have dreamed of becoming a Maiko at least once.
However, not many people, even among Japanese people, know what kind of lives these women actually lead.
This time, we’d like to introduce you to a day in the life of Maiko.
[Morning to Afternoon]
-Morning
Maiko goes to Mai, Syamisen, and Uta lessons in the morning.
The place where Maiko goes for lessons is called “Kaburenjo”, a place that is used as both a theater and a practice space.
-Noon
They eat lunch.
-Afternoon
They go to say hello to the people at “Ochaya” and Geiko who have always been so kind to them.
[Evening to night]
-Evening
As evening approaches, Maiko gets ready for work and heads out.
Makeup: As I mentioned in last week’s blog, Maiko does her own makeup. Apparently it takes about an hour to apply makeup until they get used to it, but once they get the hang of it, it only takes about 40 minutes.
Dressing KIMONO: The kimono is dressed by a man called “Otokoshi”. The maiko‘s kimono is carefully dressed so that it does not fall apart when the dance is performed.
Hair set: Maiko‘s hair is styled once a week by a professional called a “Kamiyuishi”. Once you set it, it will stay that way for a week, so there’s no need to style it every day.
Once all this preparation is complete, we move to the “Ozashiki” where Maiko‘s work begins.
Ozashiki: Where Maiko works. Maiko‘s job is to entertain customers at mealtimes. As Maiko becomes more popular, they may visit several Ozashiki venues in one night. They stay at each Ozashiki for about 2 hours, performing Mai and playing games with the customers to liven up the atmosphere.
-Night
Maiko finishes work and goes home to Okiya. After returning home, they do their skincare routine and go to bed. Maiko does Shironuri every day, so she never skips her skincare routine before going to bed to keep her skin looking beautiful!
That’s the end of Maiko‘s day.
This is how Maiko has a very hard day every day.
All of the Maiko girls are under 20 years old, but they are very patient and respectable people.
I always think that this is a wonderful job that only Maiko, who is so patient, can do.
If you come to Japan and see Maiko, please support her secretly without interfering with her work.
Did you enjoy this blog too, and was Maiko‘s day what you imagined it would be?
When I first learned about Maiko‘s day in the life, I was amazed that a girl younger than me had such a hard day.
Once again, I realize how amazing Maiko is!
Well, there’s still lots of trivia about Maiko!
In the next blog, I would like to introduce Maiko’s grooming.
We’re sure there will be plenty of Maiko trivia that will surprise you, so stay tuned for updates!
